How to Stay Safe as a Customer

As the state of Texas transitions towards more and more businesses re-opening their doors to the public, much has been made about what business can do to keep employees and customers safe. But as a consumer looking forward to getting a professional haircut or eating in your favorite restaurant again, there are things you can do to stay safe as well.

Maintain social distance

This sounds obvious, but many shoppers and business owners report that people still aren’t taking these precautions seriously when they’re out in public. Stay safe by keeping your distance from others in the aisles of stores and in line at the cash register.

Wait in your car

Nobody has had a haircut in two months, so the salons and barbershops will be very busy for the next few weeks. And restaurants are only filling to 25 percent capacity for now. Expect some wait times at businesses like these, and ask if you can wait in your car. This will minimize your exposure to others.

Contactless payment

When checking out, ask if contactless payment options (i.e. Apple Pay) are available. Lubbock Safe! certified establishments will have a barrier between customer and cashier and are encouraged to offer contactless payment options. Depending on your device, it only takes a few minutes to set up a payment from your phone.

Wear a face covering

Many businesses are requiring their employees to wear face coverings while at work, and this can be a safe measure for customers as well. Especially indoors and in high traffic businesses (i.e. grocery stores, hardware stores), everyone doing their part to minimize the spread of virus particles by wearing a face covering can go a long way.

Continue to utilize curbside options

Many businesses have shown tremendous flexibility to adapt to unusual circumstances by allowing customers to pick up their items curbside, never having to leave their car. Even as businesses open their doors, many will still offer curbside pick-up. Continue to take advantage of this if you’re more comfortable not going inside the store.

Local businesses are trying their hardest to keep people safe while maintaining operations and keeping our workforce employed. As of this week, nearly 700 area businesses are “Lubbock Safe!” With both customers and businesses doing their part, we can keep people safe during the re-opening transition.
