New Year’s Resolutions – Should You Have One?

New Year’s Resolutions – Should You Have One?

Every year around this time we get asked the same question, “What is your New Year’s Resolution?”. Should we be creating resolutions, or are they completely overrated?

Let’s dig a little deeper into the meaning. According to Merriam-Webster, the root of resolution is resolute.

res·o·lute
adjective

  1. purposeful, determined, faithful

Resolve to Define Resolute
Resolute comes from the same Latin verb as resolved, and the two words are often synonyms. So how did it get this meaning from the Latin? Essentially, when you resolve a question or problem, you come to a conclusion, and once you've reached a conclusion you can proceed to act. So in your New Year's resolutions, you resolve—or make up your mind—to do something. Unfortunately, New Year's resolutions aren't a good illustration of the meaning of resolute, since only about one in ten actually seems to succeed.

Resolution may not be the perfect word, but it shouldn’t stop you from setting goals and having high aspirations for yourself, both personally and professionally, throughout the year. Goals give life a sense of meaning and purpose, and once achieved your body releases dopamine, also known as the “feel-good” hormone.

Set yourself up for success.  Goals can be set on an annual, bi-annual or quarterly basis. Make sure to write down your goals and review periodically to ensure you are on the right track. Once a goal is achieved, celebrate – then set another goal to crush!
