National Mom and Pop Business Day

National Mom and Pop Business Day

During the social quarantine of COVID-19, it is more important than ever to support the “Mom and Pop” businesses in our community.  This crisis of containment has helped to emphasize why celebrations like National Mom and Pop Business Day, which takes place every March 29th, are so important to recognize. Small, family owned businesses can often serve as the backbone of a community and supporting these local retailers can help to keep Lubbock afloat during uncertain times like this.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, more than 28 million of these small, family owned shops exist around the U.S. and employ more than 56 million people. Our unique network of small businesses helps to create a strong economy by giving back to their community more than their big-box store counterparts.  On average, locally-owned retailers donate 50k a year back into the community they are a member of.

While trying to stay away from large crowds, shopping with smaller, independent stores or ordering carryout from your favorite Lubbock staple restaurant can serve as a tiny break from social quarantines. Even if you feel unsafe visiting your favorite business’ storefront at this time, by sharing their post on social media, stocking up on gift cards or exploring their remote purchasing options, you can ensure that our business community will survive this economic hardship.

Many of our small businesses are struggling to adjust to a reduced number of customers and it is our duty to remain supportive of the businesses that support us. 90% of U.S. businesses are family owned and they account from 78% of new jobs created. It is important to remember these businesses and support in unique ways so that after the threat to COVID-19 passes, we can continue to revisit the local businesses we love.
