In November, President Biden signed into law the bipartisan infrastructure package sent to his desk by Congress. So, what can Texans expect from the bill's passage?

Roads and Bridges

Texas has 818 bridges and nearly 20,000 miles of highway in poor condition. Commute times have increased by 11.4% on average over the last decade. The bipartisan infrastructure law is the largest dedicated investment in Texas roads and bridges since the construction of the interstate highway system. The money from the new law will increase what Texas receives in federal funding on an annual basis by 26% over the next five years.

Safety

Texas will receive roughly $150 million for highway safety traffic programs aimed at improving driver behavior and reducing injury/death from motor vehicle crashes. This represents a 29% increase compared to current funding levels. The state will also receive $247 million over five years to augment its commercial motor vehicle safety efforts, a 63% increase compared to current FAST Act levels.

Public Transportation

About 12% of of transit vehicles in Texas are past their useful life. The infrastructure package would increase funding by 32% over the next five years to $3.4 billion to improve public transportation options.

Airports

The new law also includes $1.2 billion for infrastructure development at Texas airports. This funding could go towards both airside and landside needs such as runways, taxiways, control towers, terminal projects, etc.
