Brain Injury Awareness Month Hits Close to Home

On July 28, 2015, my son Luke suffered a traumatic and anoxic brain injury from a golf cart accident. He was in cardiac arrest for seven minutes.

We spent 44 days in Lubbock, and then four months at Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth.

Shortly after our arrival, we were told by the neurologist that based on Luke’s MRI, he would never use his limbs, use his voice, and should never open his eyes.

Despite the grim outlook, Luke is working hard in OT, PT, and speech, and has used his limbs, made some sounds, and opened his beautiful blue eyes every day.

I was the tennis coach at Texas Tech for 23 years but decided to coach at Cooper High School and Laura Bush Middle School so that I could be around my children more.

The accident happened just 20 days after I resigned from Texas Tech.

In 2017, I decided to start a nonprofit to help support children after brain injury. January of 2018, my partner Ronda Johnson and I launched the
Team Luke Hope for Minds nonprofit.

In the last two years, we have helped hundreds of families in a number of ways. We offer financial support, education, counseling, and support groups.

We have given out over $350,000 to families in 23 states. We have helped families with children who have suffered non-fatal drownings, accidents at home, golf cart and ATV accidents, and car accidents. We support children 18 and under.

My passion, my responsibility, my calling is to help children like my son Luke.

March is brain injury awareness month, and my goal is to make everyone aware of this. This year we had a special day in March dedicated to Team Luke Hope for Minds. Mayor Dan Pope has recognized March 3rd as Team Luke Hope for Minds Day for the City of Lubbock.

You can help by giving $3 in honor of brain injury awareness month and Team Luke Hope for Minds day by visiting https://Luke3.givesmart.com or texting Luke3 to 76278!

I have learned a great deal about brain injuries. The most important thing is that the brain CAN heal, and with love, support, and hard work, your child CAN improve.

Luke has inspired many, and people like Drew Brees, Patrick Mahomes, and Elvis Andus, have inspired Luke.

I enjoy speaking to schools, teams, and businesses so that I can share our story and our message.

Never give up hope, always remember to put one foot in front of the other.
